bjbj june 2012 video message hello. i am scotthawkins, president of the florida bar. as the current bar year comes to a close, i amproud of the many accomplishments achieved through the committees and sections and theboard of governors of the bar. we are actively educating voters on judicial merit retentionthrough the vote s in your court program in advance of november s general election. thegrievance review commission has issued its report and recommendations and already workhas started to make identified improvements. a diversity initiatives manager, arnell bryantwillis, has joined our staff to work on ways to enhance minority initiatives across thestate with a view to helping more bar members access leadership opportunities. the constitutionaljudiciary committee has taken steps to enhance

understanding of the importance of a fairand impartial judiciary as a principle of constitutional integrity through its benchmarksprogram. a comprehensive study of for-profit lawyer referral services with the goal ofprotecting consumers is currently being finalized. the annual convention later this month willbe the culmination of months of planning and the efforts of many volunteers dedicated toproviding educational, networking and social opportunities for bar members. the committeesof the board of governors, led by effective and dedicated chairpersons, have also beenextremely productive this year with achievements including the development of enhanced communicationstools, enhanced advocacy in the legislature on behalf of court funding, and implementationof the bar s lawyer regulation functions.

in closing, i want express my strong supportfor two dear friends who will soon take the helm of the florida bar. gwynne young is anexceptional person and an exceptional leader. she is superbly qualified to be presidentof the florida bar, now the second largest mandatory state bar in the country. gwynnewill be joined by eugene pettis as incoming president-elect. i have long admired geneand he has always been a force for good and vision. gwynne and eugene, both blessed withextraordinary abilities, vision, and commitment, will make a superb team. i celebrate theirgreat accomplishment in moving forward together in leadership. as my parting words, i wishto thank all who have and supported me. the opportunity to serve our profession in thismanner has been profound, truly a singular
